From Co-op to Full-Time: My Journey at ComputerTalk

by Sayeed Matin | Published On December 16, 2025

My journey with ComputerTalk began during one of my co-op terms at the University of Waterloo, where I was studying Computer Engineering.

I was looking to build on my previous experience in software development, so I applied to the Research and Development team for a software developer co-op role. I got to experience the team and the company’s culture, which made it clear to me why ComputerTalk is a great place to grow as a developer.

My Co-op Experience

During my co-op, I worked on a project focused on exploring ways to modernize a component of the product. It was a valuable experience where I had to figure out solutions independently and learn new technologies along the way. I also got regular feedback from my team to guide my progress.

That balance of independent work and support really stood out to me. I had guidance whenever I needed it, but also the right level of autonomy to develop my skills. By the end of the term, I felt like I had grown significantly as a developer, which made the decision to return full-time after graduation an easy one.

Returning after Graduation

When I graduated, I knew I wanted to come back. I had a positive co-op experience, connected well with the team, and appreciated the level of responsibility I had. I also really enjoyed the close-knit atmosphere of the team and the company, which made it easy to learn and grow while feeling supported.

Since returning full-time, my work involves building new features and maintaining existing versions, giving me exposure to different components of the product. The role has challenged me to grow quickly, with great mentorship supporting me along the way. I’ve continued learning new technologies and building my skills, and that has been invaluable for me early in my career.

Growing in My First Six Months

In the first six months, I’ve learned more than I expected. In addition to the new technologies I learned, I have also improved my communication and collaboration skills by being more involved in planning and design discussions. I’m excited to see my role evolve as I take on more complex work and get involved earlier in shaping features.

Looking ahead, I’m eager for the projects coming up and the chance to continue building both technical and non-technical skills. As someone starting out in my career and looking to establish a solid foundation in software engineering, I’ve found ComputerTalk to be a place where I can grow, contribute, and learn from a team that genuinely supports my development.
