My time here with ComputerTalk began in the summer of 2024. I had recently graduated from the University of Waterloo and was seeking opportunities to grow and shape what my future would look like. Through word of mouth, I learned about a position opening up in the Help Desk team, so I applied. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this “one” opportunity would spin off into many more.
When I first interviewed for the position, I got to meet many of the same folks I would come to see and work with regularly today. I was coming into a space where people weren’t interested in hierarchy and the boundaries that come from it. The teams I reach out to for help on client issues are just a short walk across the office, making collaboration easy instead of navigating layers of communication with people I've never met.
That also meant seeing people wear many hats, each with their own stories on how they came to receive or ask for these responsibilities. The members of my team each have their own niches they’ve developed over their years here. With them, I’ve been mentored and enabled to ask questions, exposing me to the many facets that make up the service we provide, and what exactly makes it so unique.
Now that I’ve been able to plant roots here, I found myself looking to other teams and being interested in the range of work that exists outside of my current role. During our yearly check-ins, I expressed my desire for a change and was met with support. I received information on what teams were looking for new members and what a shift like this would entail.
Being surrounded by people who want to see you grow changed what could’ve been a fraught conversation into one with excitement on the horizon. As I make this transition, I look forward to seeing what this next opportunity has in store for me.
